TL;DR: Cleo turned its AI financial coaching chatbot into a cash-advance business serving paycheck-to-paycheck Americans. We last covered Cleo in November 2024 at a Sacra-estimated $150M in annualized revenue as LLM-powered conversations drove engagement & upsells into cash advances and credit-building products.
We’re revisiting it as AI moves from helping Cleo sell financial products to helping customers manage their finances.
Key points via Sacra AI:
- Cash-advance express fees are now Cleo’s largest source of revenue, growing 106% to $157M in 2025 (62% of revenue), versus subscriptions at $90M (35%, +55% YoY) and marketplace commissions & card interchange at $8M (3%), as Sacra estimates Cleo reached $400M in annualized revenue in May 2026, up from $333M at year-end 2025 (+79% YoY in 2025)
- At $400M/year, UK-born Cleo has grown from roughly one-quarter of Dave’s (NASDAQ: DAVE) size in 2023 to more than half in 2025, valued at $500M as of its June 2022 Series C for a ~16.7x multiple, versus Dave ($683M annualized revenue in June 2026, up 60% YoY) at a $4.7B market cap for a 6.9x multiple, both taking on traditional payday lenders like CashNetUSA and NetCredit (NYSE: ENVA) by integrating with customers’ bank accounts to predict paychecks & provide zero-interest advances (vs. 229-579% APR for CashNetUSA) while building recurring relationships around otherwise transactional borrowing needs through budgeting & savings features.
- Subscription cancellation & bill negotiation are emerging as early battlegrounds between dedicated financial agents & general-purpose personal assistants, with Rocket Money’s Rowan ($15/month) automating both, Cleo’s Autopilot (February 2026) adding financial planning, savings transfers & spending controls, and OpenAI’s dots, Grok Bot & Instinct ($1B annualized purchasing volume) extending shopping, travel & everyday assistance into money management.
