Starlink as Orbital Compute Backbone
SpaceX at $15.5B/year growing 18% YoY
This is SpaceX turning Starlink from an internet product into a transport layer for a future compute business. The important point is that orbital AI only works if one company already controls launch, satellites, network links, and an early workload. SpaceX already has nearly 9,500 active Starlink satellites, more than 9 million users, and Starship V3 is aimed at sub $100 per kg launch costs, while xAI gives the system a captive tenant for training and inference before outside cloud buyers commit.

Starlink is the backbone because it already operates the largest dense LEO network, with laser linked satellites, ground infrastructure, and user terminals. That existing mesh is what would move model outputs and customer traffic between orbital compute, Earth, and end users, instead of SpaceX needing to build a separate communications layer from scratch.

xAI matters because new infrastructure usually needs an anchor customer before the broader market shows up. SpaceX acquired xAI in February 2026, and xAI had already scaled its own AI business and compute footprint aggressively, giving SpaceX an internal buyer that can absorb early capacity and prove the economics before Google, Microsoft, or Nvidia style customers arrive.

The comparable is less a satellite company and more a vertically integrated cloud builder. Amazon can pair Kuiper with AWS, but Kuiper still needs to deploy thousands of satellites while Starlink already has scale. Blue Origin and Relativity can compete on launch, but they do not pair that with a live global broadband network and a built in AI workload.
If Starship reaches the flight rate and cost curve SpaceX is targeting, the next phase is straightforward. Starlink V3 expands the network into higher ARPU urban and suburban markets, then the same launch surplus and network backbone get reused for orbital compute. At that point, SpaceX stops looking like a launch company with a satellite side business and starts looking like a full stack space infrastructure platform.
