Reviewing context
Revolut’s UK bank launch turns it from a useful secondary wallet into a real salary and bill pay destination. With FSCS deposit protection for 13M UK users, Revolut can now credibly ask customers to move direct deposit, keep larger balances, and use overdrafts or loans, which is the exact behavior that makes Monzo and Starling sticky as primary accounts rather than spending apps.1 2
- Monzo and Starling built their edge by being licensed banks first, then using deposits to cross sell savings and lending. Monzo had about $1.25B of 2024 revenue and Starling about $966M, showing how much value sits in becoming the main account where paychecks land and balances stay.1 3 4
- Revolut comes into this fight with more scale than either rival. It had 70M plus retail customers globally, about $6B of 2025 revenue, $67.5B in customer balances, and 13M UK users at the time of its UK banking launch, which gives it a very large installed base to convert into current accounts.1 2
- The product battle is also different now. Monzo is seen as a trusted everyday UK bank, while Revolut brings a broader bundle, including FX, investing, subscriptions, and international payments. If a customer wants one app for paycheck, card spend, travel, stock trading, and money transfers, Revolut now has the banking wrapper to win that relationship.1 2
The next step is a heavier push into deposits, credit, and household share of wallet. As Revolut converts more of its UK base into primary accounts, the UK challenger market shifts from customer acquisition to account consolidation, where the winner is the app customers trust to hold their salary and route most of their financial activity.1 2 3 4
