Shein vs Trump

fast fashion was a wedge into Shein’s next stage—building a global everything store with a massive selection in direct competition with Temu

This marks Shein shifting from being a trend machine in apparel to being demand aggregation infrastructure for cheap goods across categories. Fast fashion gave Shein the app traffic, repeat purchase habit, and supplier playbook. The marketplace turns that traffic into shelf space for third party sellers in electronics, toys, home, and beauty, which is how Shein can start to look less like Zara online and more like Temu with a fashion led customer base.

  • The key mechanism is the marketplace. By 2023, marketplace sales were 35% of GMV, and Shein was pulling in outside merchants with 5% to 10% commissions and access to roughly 90M consumers. That lets Shein add huge SKU breadth without owning inventory in categories where it lacks deep design and sourcing advantages.
  • Temu is the direct comparable because it trained shoppers to open one app for almost any low priced item, not just clothes. Temu reached roughly $50B in GMV in 2024 in this model, which helps explain why Shein expanded beyond apparel just as its own revenue growth slowed to 23% in 2024.
  • This expansion also requires merchant and logistics tooling, not just consumer demand. ShipBob added a SHEIN Marketplace integration in March 2025 so sellers can sync products, orders, inventory, cancellations, and tracking, which shows Shein building the operational rails needed to recruit established marketplace sellers, including brands already selling across channels.

The next phase is a contest over who becomes the default low price shopping destination outside Amazon. Shein has the stronger fashion identity and faster apparel supply chain. If it keeps layering marketplace selection and local fulfillment on top, it can turn a clothing app into a broader retail habit and close the gap with Temu category by category.
