Klarna is trying to turn a financing button into a shopping destination, because owning the app means owning demand before checkout. If a shopper starts in Klarna instead of only seeing Klarna at payment, Klarna can decide which stores to feature, capture product level browsing and purchase data, and send merchants qualified traffic that helps justify its 3% to 6% merchant fees beyond pure financing.

  • Inside the app, Klarna can do more than offer installments. It can show featured stores, wish lists, price drop alerts, delivery tracking, and one time card generation for merchants without a native Klarna integration. That lets Klarna participate in discovery and conversion, not just payment approval.
  • This also solves a data problem. At checkout Klarna mainly sees basket value, repayment behavior, and whether the loan gets paid back. In the app it can learn what categories a shopper browses, which brands get saved, what gets clicked, and where demand starts. Klarna had already accumulated billions of SKU level transactions and was sending large daily lead volumes to merchants through the app.
  • The closest comparables show why this matters. Bolt and Rally both frame checkout identity as valuable because recognized shoppers convert better and create merchant owned customer accounts, but both are more merchant first and cautious about becoming shopping destinations. Klarna is taking the opposite path by building a consumer app layer on top of checkout.

The next phase is Klarna using the app to become a merchant acquisition channel with even better economics than BNPL alone. As more shopping starts inside Klarna, the company can bundle financing, ads, loyalty, and eventually lower cost bank based payments into one loop, making it harder for merchants and shoppers to treat Klarna as just another checkout button.
