Reddit’s monetization headroom comes from a simple mismatch, it already has mass attention, but it still monetizes that attention more like a niche community app than a scaled ad machine. In 2022 Reddit generated about $1.19 of ARPU on roughly 430M MAUs, then reached about $1.87 on $804M of 2023 revenue, while Discord was at $3.00 and Snapchat at $5.75. The gap to Meta is even larger, because Meta’s worldwide ARPP was $12.29 in Q3 2024.

  • Most of Reddit’s revenue already comes from ads, with about 93% from sponsored posts and about 7% from Premium in 2022. That means ARPU growth is mostly about selling more ad inventory at better prices, not inventing a new business line. The practical levers are better targeting, better measurement, and better packaging of intent rich communities for advertisers.
  • Reddit’s user behavior is unusually commercial for a social app. People gather in subreddits to ask what laptop to buy, which stroller lasts, or how to fix a sink. Former product leadership described this as sitting between Facebook and Google, because users are not typing a search ad keyword, but they are often revealing what they want in plain language inside discussion threads.
  • The benchmark should not be Facebook level ARPU overnight, because pseudonymous, interest based networks monetize differently from real identity feeds. Discord, another pseudonymous community product, was around $2.54 in 2022 and $3.00 in 2023. Reddit’s path is less about becoming Meta, and more about proving it can climb from low single digit ARPU toward the mid single digits as its ad stack matures.

The next phase is turning Reddit from a place advertisers test into a place they budget against consistently. As recommendation, translation, on platform search, and advertiser tools improve, Reddit should keep closing the gap between its cultural relevance and its revenue per user, which is the clearest path to sustained growth from here.
