Mercury choosing Choice signals that the winning sponsor banks are no longer just balance sheets, they are software and compliance operators that can absorb a large fintech migration without breaking the customer experience. For Mercury, the bank partner sits under every account, wire, ACH, and card swipe. For Choice, landing a startup banking leader validates that its BaaS stack can handle national scale, not just regional community banking.

  • This was not a simple vendor add. Mercury moved customer accounts off Evolve and onto Choice and Column after Evolve received a June 11, 2024 consent cease and desist order. That made sponsor bank quality, regulator readiness, and migration execution central product features, not back office details.
  • Choice sits in the same new class as Column and Lead Bank, community banks that expose their own APIs instead of relying on a middleware layer. In practice, that means fintechs can open accounts, send wires, run ACH, and issue cards through one bank relationship. That simplicity is why larger fintechs are consolidating onto a small set of sponsor banks.
  • The economics matter on both sides. Mercury generated about $500M in annualized revenue in 2024, mostly from sharing interest income on roughly $20B of deposits with partner banks, while Choice generated an estimated $315M of revenue in 2024. A partner of Mercury's size can therefore drive both low cost deposits and meaningful fee income for a sponsor bank.

Going forward, sponsor banking will keep concentrating around banks that combine a charter, direct payment rail access, and modern APIs. Choice's role with Mercury shows that the next phase of fintech infrastructure belongs to banks that can look like software companies to fintechs, while still looking like high control regulated institutions to supervisors.
