Freed bottom-up specialty strategy

Diving deeper into

Freed

Company Report
Freed could command higher prices while facing less competition from enterprise-focused players like Nuance/Microsoft.

Specialty depth is the clearest way for Freed to escape commodity pricing. In general outpatient care, ambient note taking is starting to look similar across vendors, but mental health and dental visits have different note formats, codes, and workflows tied to niche EHRs. A scribe that already fits those workflows can save more clicks, require less setup, and justify a higher monthly price than a generic tool, while avoiding the hospital buying process where Nuance and Microsoft are strongest.

  • Freed sells bottom up to individual clinicians and small practices through a $99 per month self serve plan, while larger rivals like Abridge, Suki, and Nuance have built around hospital and health system sales. That creates room for Freed to go deeper in fragmented specialties where the doctor is often still the buyer.
  • Behavioral health and dental are structurally attractive because their software stack is fragmented. Small practices often use specialty EHRs such as SimplePractice in behavioral health, and dental has its own separate software universe. In those markets, the winning product is usually the one that knows the specialty workflow best, not the one with the biggest enterprise sales team.
  • Nuance and Microsoft are most dangerous where ambient documentation is embedded into large EHR rollouts. DAX Copilot is deeply integrated with Epic and MEDITECH and is being deployed by major health systems such as Northwestern Medicine. That makes enterprise medicine a tougher battlefield than small specialty practices that buy tool by tool.

The next step is a move from generic note capture to specialty operating software. If Freed can build versions that understand a therapist's intake, a psychiatrist's medication follow up, or a dentist's procedure note and then connect that output to coding, pre charting, and billing, it can raise ACV without needing to win the same enterprise accounts as Nuance and Microsoft.
