Choice Bank Behind Fintech Apps

Diving deeper into

Choice Financial Group

Company Report
A user of apps like Current or Mercury technically holds a Choice Bank account without ever knowing it.

This is the core trick that lets fintechs feel like software companies while still moving money through the banking system. Current or Mercury owns the app, onboarding flow, and daily user relationship, but the legal deposit account sits at a regulated bank like Choice, which is the entity connected to FDIC insurance, payment rails, and bank compliance. That separation makes the bank mostly invisible until an account migration, a wire issue, or an insurance question forces the underlying structure into view.

  • For Current, the bank relationship is explicit in the legal plumbing but mostly hidden in product use. Current states that deposit accounts are provided by Choice Financial Group, and its deposit agreement says the account itself is a Choice account opened through the app, even though the customer experiences Current as the brand.
  • For Mercury, the same pattern scales into startup banking. Mercury says banking services are provided through partner banks including Choice and Column, and its dashboard now shows which specific partner bank holds each account. That matters because features can differ by bank, like Choice supporting wire drawdowns while Column supports receiving RTP.
  • The strategic value to Choice is distribution without branches. One fintech partner can deliver hundreds of thousands of end users and large deposit balances, while Choice earns fee income and deposit economics as the regulated balance sheet behind the app. Choice was estimated at $315M of revenue in 2024, putting it in the top tier of sponsor banks serving fintechs.

The next phase is more visible bank infrastructure, not less. As fintechs add multiple sponsor banks, migrate accounts, and route customers to different payment capabilities, the hidden bank layer becomes a product feature in its own right. The winners will be sponsor banks like Choice that can stay compliant while acting fast enough to feel invisible inside the software.
