Lambda’s on-premises option means it is not just selling GPU hours, it is selling a way for customers to decide where their AI stack physically lives. That matters for teams with steady training demand, sensitive data, or giant datasets, because buying a Lambda box or server can be cheaper than renting forever, avoids moving data out to a third party cloud, and keeps the same company in the workflow if that customer later expands into reserved cloud clusters.

Lambda started as an AI hardware seller before becoming a cloud GPU provider, shipping preconfigured laptops, workstations, and servers to customers like Amazon, Apple, Raytheon, and MIT. That history makes on-prem less of a side product and more of a continuation of the company’s original wedge.

In practice, cloud and on-prem solve different parts of the workflow. Training large models often needs fixed clusters, high quality InfiniBand networking, custom storage, and sometimes air gapping. Lambda’s customer work shows demand for exactly that kind of bespoke setup, while CoreWeave is built around remote cloud capacity and scaled cloud contracts.

The market is segmenting by customer shape. CoreWeave has scaled into giant enterprise cloud deals and $66.8B of backlog, while Lambda stays more attractive to smaller and mid-sized teams on price and flexibility. On-prem gives Lambda one more way to win those accounts before they become full cloud tenants.
Going forward, this pushes Lambda toward a hybrid AI infrastructure model. If more enterprises want private clusters for security, data gravity, or predictable long term cost, Lambda can sell the hardware, support the cluster, and then layer in reserved cloud and owned data center capacity around it. That broadens the company beyond pure cloud resale and makes it harder to compare head to head with CoreWeave on cloud scale alone.
