This shifts cross border dropshipping from a cheap growth hack into a supply chain execution game. The old model worked because sellers could mail low value items from China one order at a time without duty, and still arrive fast enough for impulse purchases. Once those parcels face tariffs and more customs handling, the weakest part of the model is not just price, it is delivery speed. That is why platforms like Trendsi are pushing sellers toward US warehousing, bulk imports, and higher margin private label products.

  • For low ticket fashion, a few extra dollars of duty can erase most of the profit pool. Shein has been described as operating on roughly 4 to 5% margins, which is why it has been moving best sellers into US warehouses and reserving direct parcel shipping for a shrinking share of the assortment.
  • The customer experience breaks before the math does. Trendsi says overseas delivery is already around 10 days, near the point where shoppers forget the purchase. Added customs steps turn a workable creator storefront into a refund and trust problem, especially for impulse buys on TikTok and Instagram.
  • The replacement playbook is hybrid. Trendsi describes healthy SMB brands using dropship only to test demand, then shifting winning items into wholesale or made to order production with their own labels. That means more upfront inventory planning, but better unit economics, fewer stockouts, and faster delivery.

The next leg of this market belongs to operators that can bundle sourcing, warehousing, quality control, and light manufacturing into one service. As de minimis treatment tightens for China origin parcels and bulk imports become the norm, the winners will look less like plug ins for AliExpress and more like miniature Sheins built for SMB brands.
