Airwallex Acquires OpenPay for Billing
Airwallex
This deal matters because it turns Airwallex from a company that mainly moves money into one that also controls how recurring revenue is priced, billed, collected, and analyzed. OpenPay gave Airwallex the pieces needed to run a subscription business end to end, including subscription plans, usage meters, smart payment routing, failed payment recovery, and revenue reporting, which Airwallex then rolled into its own Billing product launched in May 2026.1 2 3 4
- The practical shift is from being a PSP to being part of the quote to cash system. A SaaS company can now create an invoice or subscription inside Airwallex, charge in local currency, save the payment method, auto renew the plan, and track billing history without stitching together separate billing and payments tools.2 3 4 5
- Payment orchestration is especially important for larger global merchants. It means routing a payment to the best processor or method, improving approval rates and reducing dependence on a single PSP. That is the same wedge used by specialists like Primer, but Airwallex can bundle orchestration directly with its own cross border payments rails.1 6 7 8
- The competitive logic mirrors Stripe. Stripe used Billing to move beyond payment acceptance and capture more of the recurring revenue workflow. Airwallex is following a similar path, but with a stronger emphasis on multicurrency billing and local payment methods for companies selling across borders.1 2 6 9
The next step is deeper bundling. Billing, orchestration, cards, FX, treasury, and embedded finance are being assembled into one operating layer for internet businesses. As Airwallex pushes further into software led revenue operations, the company is moving closer to owning both the movement of funds and the commercial logic that decides when and how those funds are collected.2 3 8 9
