Local-First Rewind vs Cloud Scale

Diving deeper into

Apple vs. Limitless vs. Gong

Rewind’s ambitious product concept had a key technical limitation—running locally, it relied on users’ CPUs to run its voice-to-text models

That local first design made Rewind feel privacy forward, but it capped product quality exactly where the category was getting more compute hungry. Rewind was trying to transcribe and index everything on a laptop, including screen activity, system audio, and ambient conversation, which meant model performance was bounded by the user’s own machine. That is a very different starting point from Gong, which turns centrally processed call data into a shared system of record for teams and then sells more workflows on top.

  • Rewind’s desktop product collected about 11GB of data per user per month. Once the product moved from meeting notes to always on memory, the bottleneck stopped being recording and became cheap, scalable transcription and retrieval. Local CPUs are fine for lightweight summarization, but not for best available models over that volume.
  • The market was also moving toward bundled call recording. Meeting bots and transcription APIs made it easy for sales and productivity tools to add recording without inventing new hardware or new on device workflows. That made Rewind’s technically harder approach less advantaged just as the category got crowded.
  • Gong shows the opposite architecture. It stores company wide call data centrally, then pipes structured outputs into forecast, engagement, and other revenue products. That has produced much larger scale, from about $232M ARR in 2023 to $298M in 2024, because the transcription layer feeds team workflows, not just an individual memory tool.

The next phase belongs to products that treat captured conversation as cloud data infrastructure, not just personal recall. That favors companies that can turn raw audio into shared workflows, higher value summaries, and follow on products, whether they start from meeting software like Gong or from hardware and move their intelligence off device like Limitless.
