Collaborate on Azure Compete on Other Clouds

The Azure partnership makes Databricks stronger in the Microsoft ecosystem, but it also caps how much strategic room Microsoft is willing to give it. On Azure, Databricks is sold as a deeply integrated first party service that works with Fabric, Power BI, Azure AI Foundry, and other Microsoft tools. Outside Azure, Microsoft still has every reason to steer customers toward its own data and AI stack, because those workloads help sell more of the broader Azure and Microsoft software bundle.

Azure Databricks is not just another marketplace app. Microsoft describes it as a native first party Azure service and highlights tight links into Fabric and Power BI. That makes Databricks a strong on ramp for Azure data workloads, especially inside large Microsoft accounts that already buy security, identity, and Office from the same vendor.

The overlap is real because Microsoft also owns competing products. Fabric packages analytics, warehousing, governance, and AI into Microsoft’s own stack, while Databricks sells a lakehouse, SQL, governance, and model tooling that targets many of the same budgets and teams. In practice, the fight is over who becomes the main place where enterprise data teams build pipelines, queries, and AI apps.

This is a familiar pattern in the modern data stack. Platforms partner where distribution helps, then compete as each side expands into adjacent workflows. Databricks has done the same against Snowflake and dbt by moving from Spark infrastructure into SQL analytics, governance, and AI, which means hyperscaler partners increasingly meet it head on in higher value layers of the stack.
Going forward, Azure should remain Databricks’s most cooperative hyperscaler channel, because Microsoft can win even when Databricks wins there through cloud consumption and ecosystem pull through. But as data platforms absorb more of analytics and AI into one surface, the long term battle is to own the full daily workflow, which keeps Microsoft and Databricks aligned on Azure and increasingly competitive everywhere else.
