Vertical integration makes Figure more like a car company with its own drivetrain and battery line than a robotics startup buying parts off the shelf. When the same team designs the robot, builds the battery and actuators, and sees failures from live deployments, it can change a weak wrist board or thermal bottleneck quickly and push those fixes straight into the next hardware revision. That matters because reliability, not demo quality, is what turns pilots into fleet rollouts.

  • BotQ is not just final assembly. Figure says it engineers and manufactures battery systems in house there, and uses factory software like PLM, ERP, WMS, and MES to keep process control tight. That means a battery issue can be traced from cell pack design to production step to field performance without waiting on a contract manufacturer.
  • The BMW deployment shows why that loop matters. After 1,250 plus hours and 90,000 plus parts loaded, Figure identified forearm and wrist electronics as a key failure point and reworked the wrist architecture in Figure 03. Outsourced manufacturing slows that handoff between field failure, redesign, validation, and line change.
  • Figure is not alone in betting on this model. Agility builds through its RoboFab facility and 1X manufactures in house with custom actuators, which shows that leading humanoid companies increasingly view manufacturing control as part of the product. In humanoids, the robot body, battery, actuator, and control stack have to be tuned together, not sourced as separate boxes.

The next battleground is whether these in house factories can scale from proving reliability to producing tens of thousands of robots without losing speed or quality. If Figure executes, BotQ becomes more than a plant. It becomes the engine that compounds hardware learning, software learning, and cost down at the same time.
