Runway is built more like a new video software stack than a thin app on top of someone else’s model. It trains its own models, builds the systems that prepare video data and run inference fast enough for editing, and then packages that into a browser based product for filmmakers, marketers, and post production teams. That matters because video quality, latency, and workflow are tightly linked, so product gains often require changes all the way down to the model and rendering layer.

  • In practice, full stack means Runway is not just making text to video demos. It built production tools like rotoscoping, inpainting, subtitle generation, and green screen, then tuned the backend so those features work inside an editing workflow instead of as one off research outputs.
  • This is the opposite of many text AI startups from 2022 to 2024, which could rent the same base model and compete mostly on prompts, packaging, or distribution. In video, temporal consistency, encoding, streaming, and rendering make infrastructure a bigger product differentiator.
  • Runway’s stack also supports a more vertical market position than consumer wrappers like Pika or model access products inside larger platforms. Its tools are used directly by editors and filmmakers, and also embedded by partners like Canva for video generation, which shows the model layer and app layer can both monetize.

The next phase is that AI video companies will split into orchestrators that bundle outside models, and integrated builders that own model, infra, and workflow. Runway is positioned in the second camp, where the upside comes from making professional video creation faster, cheaper, and native to the web rather than simply exposing raw model output.
