The real risk is that AI music apps can collapse creation and listening into one loop, which attacks SoundCloud from both sides at once. Today, SoundCloud benefits by plugging AI beat making, vocal, and remix tools into its artist workflow. But Suno already sells directly to creators, lets them generate full songs from prompts, and is building a feed where the same user can make a track, post it, and listen inside one product.

  • SoundCloud is still positioned as the artist workbench. It offers uploads, distribution, analytics, messaging, mastering, promo boosts, ticketing, and six AI creation partners. That makes AI complementary when it helps artists make tracks faster and then publish them into SoundCloud's audience and monetization stack.
  • Suno is different because the product starts with generation, not distribution. A user types a prompt, gets lyrics, vocals, instrumentation, and arrangement, then can remix and extend the song inside the same consumer app. That lowers the skill barrier from knowing music software to knowing what kind of song to ask for.
  • The competitive line sharpens as quality improves and workflows professionalize. Suno grew from about $45M ARR at the end of 2024 to about $147M by September 2025, added advanced editing, bought WavTool, and expanded from hobbyists into YouTubers, producers, and creators uploading AI tracks to streaming platforms for royalties.

The next phase is a fight over where music starts. If AI music apps keep improving editing, ownership rights, and social discovery, more creation will begin inside AI native products and only later flow to distribution platforms.
