Fanatics is trying to turn a low margin fan retail machine into a lower cost sportsbook funnel. The key advantage is not that its betting product is radically different, it is that Fanatics already has the email, app, purchase history, and loyalty wallet of more than 100M sports shoppers, so it can pitch betting inside an existing relationship while DraftKings and FanDuel have historically spent heavily on promos, ads, and bonuses to create that relationship from scratch.

  • Fanatics built this funnel by operating team and league stores for more than 900 properties, taking a cut of ecommerce sales and wholesaling licensed gear. That retail base produced about $6.2B of 2024 revenue, which helps fund a much smaller but faster growing betting unit at about $300M.
  • The betting push became much more real with the $225M PointsBet US acquisition, which gave Fanatics market access, technology, and customers across most of the legal U.S. sportsbook market. Fanatics then layered FanCash on top, giving bettors store credit that can be spent back in merchandise and collectibles.
  • This is the same broad playbook that helped FanDuel early on. FanDuel used its fantasy user base to move into sportsbook, and Flutter says the brand has held the number one U.S. position with roughly half of online sportsbook revenue share in recent periods. Fanatics is applying that database advantage from commerce instead of fantasy.

The next phase is whether Fanatics can make betting feel like one wallet across merch, cards, casino, and sportsbook. If that works, Fanatics will not need to beat incumbents only on odds and promos. It can win by becoming the default app for casual fans who already buy jerseys, rip packs, and now place a bet in the same ecosystem.
