Duffl’s edge is not software, it is route memory embedded in the labor force. On a campus, student racers already know which dorm entrance to use, which door code works, and which shortcut avoids the long loop, so dispatch can stay simple while each trip carries four or five orders. That is how Duffl gets to 10 to 12 orders per hour per racer, versus the 3 to 6 orders per hour that management says is typical in the category.

  • This only works in a very specific map. Duffl targets campuses because they pack tens of thousands of people into a small radius, which raises order density and lets one rider make repeated short trips from a nearby store. That is very different from car based suburban delivery, where every wrong turn costs minutes.
  • Most ultrafast operators lean on batching software, dark stores, and micromobility to push drop rates higher. Duffl is showing that on campus, local knowledge can substitute for routing tech early on, because the human rider already has the campus graph in memory. That lowers coordination overhead before heavier software arrives.
  • The broader implication is that campus delivery behaves more like a closed network than an open city marketplace. Starship’s university business shows the same basic pattern, dense geography and repeated trips inside a fixed environment. In those settings, whoever learns the terrain fastest can turn labor efficiency into better margins and stronger local lock in.

Over time, the winning campus operators will turn this human routing advantage into software, but the starting asset is still the same, dense local knowledge. As Duffl adds university payment integrations and more systematic inventory tools, the company can standardize what its best racers already do by instinct and push each campus toward higher throughput with less training time.
