Revolut transition to higher margin products
Revolut
The real unlock was that Revolut used a low margin travel and money movement product to build daily habit, then sold products where each extra user action carried much richer economics. Card spending and FX mainly earn small interchange and spread fees, while crypto, stocks, subscriptions, insurance, deposits, credit, and merchant acquiring add fee streams that do not depend on a customer swiping a card abroad.1 2 3 4
- By 2024, Wealth, mainly crypto and stock investing, had become Revolut’s fastest growing business at $647M of revenue, up 298% YoY. That shows how a neobank can turn a payments audience into a trading business with meaningfully higher take rates than basic checking and card usage.1 2
- This is the standard neobank playbook, but executed at unusual scale. Interchange based models often earn only a small cut of spend, around 0.7% to 1.5% of transaction volume, which is why leading neobanks push into lending, subscriptions, and other adjacencies to raise ARPU and survive downturns.3 4
- Revolut also spread this logic across both consumers and SMBs. On the consumer side it added trading, savings, and paid plans. On the business side it added merchant acquiring, where Revolut can earn processing revenue when small businesses accept card payments, not just when users spend them.1 2
The next phase is a denser revenue mix where banking becomes the distribution layer and higher margin products become the profit engine. As Revolut keeps adding deposits, credit, wealth, and business payments, it looks less like a travel card app and more like a full stack financial platform with multiple profit pools inside one customer relationship.1 2 3
