Reddit made the conversation the centerpiece

This choice turned Reddit from a link board into a machine for producing fresh text, opinion, and intent at scale. A post was just the spark. The real product was the long reply chain underneath, where people compared products, argued news, explained hobbies, and added context that did not exist in the original link. That made Reddit more useful than Digg for repeat visits and more defensible as the web shifted from sharing links to harvesting conversations.

  • Digg optimized around the act of voting on links, while Reddit built deep threading, karma, and subreddits that rewarded staying to talk. When Digg pushed users toward publisher content in 2010, traffic fell from 29M to 7M monthly uniques while Reddit grew from 1.7M to 9.2M.
  • Putting discussion first also created a better ad surface. People do not just browse headlines on Reddit, they reveal what they want in plain language inside niche communities like product recommendation and hobby forums. That gives Reddit commercial intent closer to search than to a typical social feed.
  • The tradeoff is that conversation centric products are harder to moderate and slower to polish for advertisers. Reddit kept looser rules than Slashdot early on to maximize participation, then tightened moderation later as ads scaled. Discord now competes for the same pseudonymous discussion behavior in faster, real time chat.

The next phase is making those discussions easier to package, rank, and monetize without breaking the habit that made them valuable. Reddit is moving from hosting threads to training algorithms and AI products on top of them, which makes ownership of conversation, not just content distribution, the core asset going forward.
