Unity Catalog matters because it turns Databricks from a place where data teams run jobs into the control layer for how a company lets humans and models touch sensitive data. Once a company uses Unity Catalog to decide which tables, files, models, and functions each team can access, Databricks sits in the middle of every later AI workflow, from retrieval to model serving to agent building. That makes AI expansion easier to sell than a standalone training tool.

  • The wedge works because governance gets bought earlier than model training. Large companies first need one place to set permissions, lineage, and audit rules across analysts, apps, and models.
