The key point is that fantasy sports can already support large standalone businesses because the product is cheap to run, habit forming, and able to earn revenue from repeat contest entry without the full licensing and compliance burden of a sportsbook. In practice, users keep coming back to draft teams, enter pick'em contests around every slate of games, and pay entry fees that the platform skims at roughly a 10% to 15% take rate, which is enough to build a meaningful company even before moving into betting.

  • Underdog itself shows why founders are tempted to stay focused. Its core fantasy products already monetize through contest fees, and its own product ladder starts with season long drafts, then moves users into more frequent pick'em play where transaction volume is higher.
  • The real split between companies is capital strategy, not whether fantasy works. PrizePicks grew into the largest daily fantasy operator in North America without venture backing, while Underdog raised capital and pursued the harder sportsbook path, which needs state by state licenses and much heavier execution.
  • Fantasy also remains attractive because it can be the top of the funnel for bigger products later. DraftKings and FanDuel used daily fantasy to build audience before sportsbook legalization, while Fanatics is trying to cross sell betting from a 100M plus fan database it built in commerce, despite not starting with a fantasy product.

The market is heading toward a layered model where fantasy remains the lowest friction entry point, sportsbooks capture the next spend tier, and prediction markets add another adjacent format. Companies that keep a strong fantasy product will keep owning inexpensive customer acquisition and high engagement, even as the rest of the sports gaming stack expands around them.
