Major Cloud Providers Threaten Lambda

Diving deeper into

Lambda Labs

Company Report
The biggest long-term competition for Lambda Labs is likely to be the major three cloud providers

This points to Lambda eventually competing less with other GPU startups and more with clouds that control the whole stack. AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure already sell the general cloud products companies use to store data, run apps, manage security, and sign long term spend contracts. They are also building their own AI chips and managed accelerator offerings, which lets them fold AI compute into a much bigger product bundle than Lambda can offer on its own.1 2 3 4 5 6 7

  • Lambda wins today by being a focused GPU cloud for model training and fine tuning, but customer interviews show the hyperscalers still own production workloads and surrounding services. One Lambda customer used Lambda for training and AWS for deployment, which captures the core gap, cheap and available GPUs are not the same thing as full production cloud infrastructure.1 5 8
  • The big three also have a hardware path that startups do not. AWS offers Trainium based instances and says Trn2 can cut training cost versus comparable options. Google offers its own TPU family through Compute Engine and GKE, including TPU7x. Microsoft is deploying Maia 200 inside Azure. That means the hyperscalers are not limited to buying Nvidia GPUs at market terms forever.9 10 11 12 13 14
  • Even during the GPU shortage, the majors were both competitors and customers of specialist clouds. Azure signed multibillion dollar capacity deals with CoreWeave because demand outran its own supply. That is helpful for specialists in the short run, but long term it shows the hyperscalers can use outside supply tactically while they keep expanding their own fleets, chips, and enterprise distribution.6 15

The likely end state is a split market. Focused GPU clouds like Lambda can keep winning researchers and fast moving AI teams with simpler access and better economics on specific workloads, while the major clouds pull the largest enterprise and platform accounts back into integrated bundles. As custom silicon improves, the pressure on independent GPU clouds will shift from chip access to customer ownership.2 5 8 9 10 11 12 13 14
