The core split in consumer metaverse is not graphics or crypto, it is who controls identity, distribution, and monetization. Meta and Epic keep the user relationship inside their own account systems, app stores, and creator tools, which lets them control discovery and take a cut of commerce. Crypto native worlds like The Sandbox push harder on creator ownership, but they still run a managed platform where publishing, moderation, and in world traffic depend on platform rules and interfaces.

  • Epic shows what a closed stack looks like in practice. A creator builds inside Unreal Editor for Fortnite, publishes into Fortnite, gets analytics through Epic APIs, and monetizes through Epic managed payouts and item systems. That keeps audience data and demand generation inside Fortnite rather than portable across the open web.
  • Meta follows the same logic from the hardware side. Horizon Worlds sits on top of Meta accounts and Quest distribution, so the company controls login, social graph, device access, and store economics in one loop. That is why consumer metaverse leaders resemble app stores and game consoles more than open websites.
  • The Sandbox is more open on asset ownership. It says creators retain IP in uploaded assets and can mint items as NFTs, and it has opened direct publishing for LAND owners. But the platform still reserves review and takedown rights, which means ownership of assets is more open than ownership of audience access.

The market is heading toward a hybrid model. Consumer platforms will keep tightening control over identity, recommendation, and payments because that is where the money and network effects sit. The opening for companies like Infinite Reality is to sell brands and enterprises a metaverse stack where the world, customer data, and commerce rails live on infrastructure they control instead of inside someone else’s feed or game.
