Paycheck Routing Fuels Neobank Competition

Diving deeper into

Pinwheel, Argyle, Atomic, and the direct deposit switching APIs funding $10T to neobanks

By making it easy to pull money from paychecks, Pinwheel and others are creating a whole new set of competitors for incumbent banks and neobanks.

Direct deposit switching turns the paycheck itself into the new distribution channel for consumer finance. Once an app can reroute part of a user’s wages in a few clicks, it no longer needs to become that person’s main bank first. That lets payroll linked products, from Cash App to Perpay to Gusto Wallet and Deel Card, compete for the most valuable slice of the banking relationship, the incoming paycheck and the spend that follows.

  • For neobanks, the direct deposit user is the profit center. Direct deposit users can be worth 30x to 40x more in lifetime value, and even incumbent banks make far more from them than from ordinary checking customers. The API layer matters because it removes the paperwork and employer coordination that used to protect incumbents.
  • The new competitors are not just other banks. Cash App used Pinwheel to grow direct deposit actives to 1.5M, and those users brought in 6.5x more cash inflows than P2P only users. Payroll platforms can also push wages straight into their own wallets and cards, which means Gusto and Deel can extend from paying workers into holding and spending their money.
  • Payroll connectivity also changes underwriting. Perpay can serve sub 550 FICO users because it verifies income at the source and gets repaid from paychecks. Pinwheel describes a 3x repayment lift for paycheck connected BNPL cohorts, showing why vertical fintechs can now profitably target customers that banks and standard BNPL providers often avoid.

The next phase is a market where no single checking account owns the customer by default. As fractional switching spreads, wages will be split across wallets, savings products, lenders, and payroll apps, and winners will be the products that give the clearest reason to claim a recurring piece of every paycheck.
