Lago Faces Pressure From Bundled Platforms

Vertical integration turns billing from a standalone tool into a distribution weapon for payments platforms. When the same vendor handles metering, invoicing, payment acceptance, retries, tax connections, and global money movement, finance and engineering teams can buy one stack instead of stitching together Lago with Stripe, Adyen, GoCardless, and other back office systems. That lowers integration work and raises switching costs, which is why bundled players can pressure independents even when the independent product is more flexible.

Stripe already used this playbook in subscription billing. It launched Stripe Billing as a low priced add on to payments, then in December 2025 bought Metronome for $1B to add high throughput usage metering for AI and infrastructure companies, extending the bundle from payments into the core billing engine itself.

Lago sits on the other side of that tradeoff. It is developer first, open source, and vendor neutral, with self hosted and VPC deployment options plus integrations across payment processors, ERP, CRM, and tax systems. That makes it attractive for companies that want control, but it also means more assembly work than a single vendor bundle.

Consolidation shrinks the field of independent usage billing vendors. Metronome moving inside Stripe removed a major standalone alternative, leaving Lago, Orb, Sequence, m3ter, and a smaller set of specialists to compete against much larger platforms that can subsidize billing with payment revenue and existing customer relationships.
The market is moving toward two lanes. Large platforms will keep pulling billing into broader financial infrastructure bundles, especially for companies that already run payments there. Independent vendors will respond by going deeper on control, deployment flexibility, multi processor orchestration, and finance workflows that bundled stacks handle less well today. Lago’s path is to become the best neutral system for companies that do not want their billing logic locked inside a processor.
