This matters because Reddit is not just another place to buy social impressions, it is a source of incremental reach that large advertisers often cannot get on Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok. That makes Reddit especially useful for brands trying to find hobbyists, researchers, and buyers inside niche communities, where people post detailed questions, recommendations, and purchase intent instead of just scrolling a friend feed.

  • The overlap claim points to Reddit’s biggest ad sales advantage. In 2022 Reddit disclosed that in the U.S., 30% of active Reddit users were not active on Facebook, 45% were not active on Instagram, and 58% were not active on TikTok. More recent Reddit marketing material for Q2 2024 shows the same pattern, with 32%, 37%, and 41% respectively not active on those platforms.
  • That audience looks different because Reddit is organized around pseudonymous interest groups, not real identity graphs. People show up to ask what laptop to buy, how to fix a bike, or which running shoes last longest. Former product leadership at Reddit described the platform as sitting between Facebook and Google, with more commercial intent than a friend network but less explicit intent than a search box.
  • The tradeoff is monetization depth. Reddit generated about $510M of revenue in 2022 at roughly $1.19 ARPU, far below Facebook and Instagram, and also below Discord’s roughly $2.54 ARPU. That gap reflects how much harder it is to target anonymous communities than real identity feeds, even when the audience is highly engaged and distinctive.

Going forward, this unduplicated audience will matter even more as Reddit sells itself less as a broad social app and more as the place to capture intent before a purchase. The more Reddit can turn community conversations into readable signals for ad targeting, shopping, and search, the more it can raise ARPU without losing the niche audience that makes the platform valuable in the first place.
