Choosing a closed product forced SingleStore into a top down enterprise sale, while open source database companies built a bottom up habit loop with developers first. A developer can download CockroachDB Core for free, run it on a laptop, and later move to managed cloud or paid enterprise features. SingleStore instead asks teams to enter through a licensed product, which makes it harder to become the default tool engineers learn, test, and recommend inside a company.

  • Cockroach Labs commercialized open source with a familiar funnel. Free self hosted use created adoption, then revenue came from enterprise features, support, and managed cloud. That model helped it reach $30M revenue in 2021, with cloud growing quickly and nearly half of customers on cloud by Q4 2021.
  • SingleStore has still built a meaningful business, about $110M ARR in 2023 with roughly 320 customers by the end of 2022 and about $266K average revenue per customer. That customer profile shows concentration in larger accounts, not broad grassroots developer usage.

CouchDB is explicitly open source, Redis spent 2024 to 2025 adjusting its license after backlash, and MongoDB continues to frame source availability as a way to strengthen community and product feedback. In databases, the install base often starts with code access before it becomes revenue.

The likely path forward is deeper focus on workloads where raw performance and mixed transactional plus analytical queries matter enough that buyers accept a licensed product. If SingleStore keeps winning as the real time analytics layer beside an existing warehouse, it can grow without matching MongoDB or Redis in developer ubiquity, but it will remain more account driven than community driven.
