Freed is winning by selling to the easiest buyer in healthcare, but that buyer base is getting structurally smaller. The product works because a solo doctor or tiny clinic can start paying $99 per month without a big IT project, yet U.S. medicine keeps shifting toward larger, employed, and hospital owned groups where software choices are made centrally and deeper EHR integration matters more than lightweight adoption.

The near term appeal is obvious. Small practices can buy quickly, and that helped Freed grow from 12,000 clinicians in August 2024 to 17,000 in March 2025. But the same segment is under pressure. The share of physicians in private practice fell to 42.2% in 2024, down from 60.1% in 2012.

The technical problem gets harder as Freed moves beyond the smallest offices. In outpatient care below the hospital level, the EHR market is fragmented across Athenahealth and hundreds of specialty systems. Deep integration is not one API hookup. It means mapping notes, diagnoses, orders, and billing fields into each workflow.

That is where enterprise focused rivals have an edge. Abridge traded equity and revenue share for deeper Epic access, then used those partnerships to expand from about 8,000 to more than 60,000 clinicians across 100 plus health systems by May 2025. Freed can stay lean down market, but larger accounts reward embedded distribution and integration depth.
The next phase pushes Freed toward a choice. It can keep compounding inside the independent tail with broader workflow tools like coding and payments, or it can invest into a narrower set of EHR and channel partnerships to follow customers as consolidation moves them into larger organizations. The companies that own documentation plus system workflow will own the upgrade path from scribe to full clinical admin copilot.
