Airwallex becomes merchant operating layer
Airwallex
Airwallex is turning from a cross-border payments tool into a merchant operating layer that can sit behind every way a business gets paid. The POS launch matters because it lets the same merchant use Airwallex for a card tap in a store, a checkout online, FX conversion, card issuing, and cash management, instead of stitching together separate vendors for countertop payments and internet payments.1 2 3 4
- The product is not just a card reader. Airwallex says merchants can take in person payments through physical terminals, SoftPOS on phones, or existing POS systems, which means it can plug into store workflows instead of forcing merchants onto a brand new checkout stack.1 5
- This also changes the competitive set. Online Airwallex was closest to Wise, PayPal, and bank FX tools. In store, it runs into Stripe Terminal, Square, and SumUp, but with a different bundle built around global accounts, FX, and embedded finance for multi market merchants.6 2 7
- The bigger pattern is stack expansion. OpenPay added subscriptions, orchestration, and revenue analytics in September 2025, and later research shows cards and payments were already more than half of gross profit, so POS gives Airwallex one more payment surface to deepen account control and raise revenue per merchant.3 4 8
The next step is a fuller unified commerce play, where Airwallex becomes most valuable to software platforms and international retailers that want one backend for online checkout, physical stores, billing, treasury, and local market acceptance. If adoption lands, Airwallex will look less like a cheaper way to move money across borders and more like a global version of Stripe’s expansion from web payments into commerce infrastructure.1 2 6 8
