iCapital as alternatives operating system
Managing Director at iCapital on wirehouse distribution challenges and tech evolution
This points to iCapital becoming less of a feeder fund wrapper and more of the operating system for private wealth alternatives. Growth comes from turning private market access into something advisers can sell in smaller tickets, on a recurring basis, with cleaner onboarding, reporting, and servicing. Tokenization and distributed ledger matter because they can replace today’s one off reconciliations, duplicate KYC, and manual capital call workflows with a shared system of record across banks, admins, and managers.

The immediate product shift is from old drawdown feeders toward evergreen and other registered structures that can take more investors and stay continuously open. That makes alternatives behave more like shelf products inside a wirehouse, with regular subscriptions, simpler suitability, and easier portfolio construction for advisors.
-
The operational bottleneck is not investor demand, it is bad plumbing. Existing workflows still run through fragmented email, SFTP, and custom integrations, and prior industry utility efforts have not solved the problem. iCapital’s DLT push is aimed at standardizing subscription data, capital activity, and reporting across many counterparties.
-
That also changes how money is made. As product fees compress, more revenue shifts to software, integration, reporting, and enterprise contracts. iCapital has already been building toward that model through data aggregation and reporting capabilities, including the Mirador acquisition, rather than relying only on basis points from feeder funds.
Over the next few years, the winners in wirehouse alternatives will be the platforms that make private funds feel operationally close to mutual funds, even if the assets stay illiquid underneath. That favors iCapital if it can own the shared workflow layer between distributors, asset managers, and fund administrators, and make flexible product structures easier to launch than the old bespoke feeder model.
