Bundling POS with money movement products turns Airwallex from a checkout vendor into the operating account behind the merchant. A seller can take an in store card payment, settle funds into local or foreign currency accounts, convert balances for suppliers or payroll, and issue employee cards from the same system. That matters because Airwallex already built its business around cross border flows and increasingly makes more of its gross profit from cards and payments, not just FX transfers.1 2 3

  • Stripe, Square, and SumUp all sell in person payments, but they come from different starting points. Stripe extends an internet payments stack into stores, SumUp starts with SMB hardware and POS, while Airwallex starts with global accounts, FX, and embedded finance APIs, then adds the terminal on top.1 4 5
  • The bundle is most useful for merchants that operate across countries. Instead of sending store takings out to a separate bank, treasury tool, or card issuer, the merchant can keep balances inside Airwallex, move money between entities, and spend through issued cards. That increases wallet share per customer and makes churn harder.1 2 3
  • This also pushes Airwallex closer to Adyen at the upper end of unified commerce, but with a different wedge. Adyen wins large enterprises that want one acquirer across channels, while Airwallex is packaging online and offline acceptance with cross border banking functions for digital native businesses and platforms.3 6

The next step is for in store acceptance to become another entry point into Airwallex accounts, cards, and platform APIs. If that works, POS will not be a hardware line on its own, it will be a distribution channel that pulls more merchant volume and more day to day money movement onto Airwallex’s network.1 2 3
