Cloud Providers Threaten Databricks

Diving deeper into

Databricks

Company Report
These cloud providers could change pricing, limit API access, or enhance their own offerings in ways that disadvantage Databricks

Databricks wins by sitting above every cloud, so the biggest platform risk is that the clouds also control the roads, tolls, and on ramps. Databricks sells one interface for data engineering, SQL analytics, model training, and AI apps across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, but each of those providers also sells native products that can bundle storage, compute, and AI into a cheaper default stack inside their own cloud.

  • The pressure is most concrete on AWS and Microsoft, where Databricks competes against Redshift, EMR, SageMaker, Synapse, Azure ML, and now Microsoft Fabric. Those products live closer to the underlying infrastructure bill, so the cloud can change economics through list pricing, private discounts, zero egress style packaging, and enterprise agreement bundling.
  • The relationship is uneven across clouds. Azure is partner and competitor at the same time, because Azure Databricks gives Microsoft distribution while Fabric pushes a more vertically integrated alternative. Google Cloud has been more partner friendly, including bringing Gemini into Databricks and supporting Databricks on Google Cloud.
  • This risk matters because Databricks monetizes usage. If a cloud makes its own stack easier to buy, cheaper to move data into, or more tightly connected to adjacent services, the buyer does not need to leave the cloud console to assemble an analytics and AI workflow. That can raise Databricks customer acquisition costs and compress margins even if demand for AI stays strong.

The next phase is a fight over who owns the daily workflow for enterprise data teams. Databricks is moving deeper into warehousing, governance, and model serving so customers can justify staying with an independent control plane, while hyperscalers keep tightening their own all in one stacks. The companies that keep multi cloud workflows genuinely easier and cheaper will take the budget.
