This workflow is the crack in BI’s value proposition, dashboards are good at showing that something changed, but not at letting an analyst actually pull the thread. Teams still jump back into Excel because that is where they can sort raw rows, write ad hoc formulas, test a theory, and fix edge cases fast. Equals is trying to collapse prototype, investigation, and reporting into one surface instead of forcing analysts to shuttle between Sheets, Tableau, and desktop spreadsheets.

  • The same pattern shows up across modern FP&A. Causal described BI and spreadsheets as two disconnected tools for one job, historical reporting lives in Looker or Tableau, while forecasting and root cause work still happen in spreadsheets. That is why newer products keep adding dashboards, live data connections, and scenario modeling in the same product.
  • There are two main ways vendors attack this gap. Equals and similar browser spreadsheets try to keep the spreadsheet workflow and add direct warehouse connections and dashboards. Vena takes the opposite route and leans into Excel itself for midmarket finance teams that already want planning, reporting, and permissions wrapped around familiar workbooks.
  • The commercial upside is real when a product fits the spreadsheet habit instead of fighting it. Vena reached an estimated $116M ARR in 2024 by selling Excel centric planning software, and DataSnipper reached an estimated $45M ARR in 2023 by turning a narrow Excel workflow for auditors into a paid seat expansion engine.

The next phase is a fight to become the default place where finance and operating teams both inspect live numbers and build plans. If Equals keeps replacing the investigate in Excel step, it can move from an analyst tool to a lightweight BI system, especially in smaller companies that want one flexible workspace before they buy a separate BI stack.
