Owning both the optical chip and the light source lets Lightmatter sell a retrofit as one engineered system instead of a science project. In practice, that matters because data center operators do not just need a faster interconnect chip, they need a reliable way to generate, route, and manage light inside crowded racks. Lightmatter has built Passage for the optical links and Guide for the integrated laser layer, which reduces dependence on external laser farms and makes co-packaged optics easier to drop into existing AI and HPC designs.

  • Retrofit value comes from replacing multiple separate parts with one package. Guide is designed as a compact light engine with telemetry and up to 100 Tbps supported in one rack unit, while Passage is the optical engine that moves data between processors. That combination makes the install look more like a platform swap than a custom lab integration.
  • The key competitive difference is scope. Ayar Labs also sells both an optical I.O chiplet and an external light source, but it is focused on data movement only. Celestial AI is building an optical fabric for scale up networks and memory attachment. Lightmatter spans interconnect, lasers, and photonic compute, which gives it more ways into a retrofit budget.
  • This is why partnerships with Cadence, Synopsys, and GUC matter. They connect Lightmatter's photonics and laser stack to standard SerDes, UCIe, ASIC design, and packaging workflows that hyperscalers already use. A retrofit only becomes real when it fits the existing chip and packaging toolchain, not just when the optics work in isolation.

The market is heading toward co-packaged optics as AI clusters outgrow copper links and pluggable modules. Companies that can deliver the full optical path, from lasers to packaging to chip level interconnect, will be in the best position to win large data center upgrade programs. Lightmatter is building toward that role now.
