Consolidation Boosts Rubrik's Market Opportunity
Rubrik
Consolidation helps Rubrik because it sells into a part of the security stack that already touches the company’s most important data and recovery workflows. When a security team wants fewer tools, backup and recovery is not just another module to cut, it is the system that has to work after ransomware hits. That gives Rubrik room to bundle backup, ransomware response, compliance, and cloud data security into one purchase and expand from IT budget into security budget.

Rubrik already has the distribution wedge that many newer security vendors lack. It started as the product that backs up servers, cloud workloads, and SaaS data, then layered on security products around that installed base. In 2023, subscription revenue grew 40% to $538M and reached 86% of revenue, showing customers are buying more software on top of the backup core.

The market is also consolidating at the vendor level. Cohesity completed its combination with Veritas’ enterprise data protection business in December 2024, creating a much larger platform in backup and data security. Rubrik’s 2023 Laminar acquisition shows the same playbook, adding DSPM so customers can find sensitive data in public cloud environments inside the same platform they use for recovery.
-
This is different from point products like BigID, which focus on discovering and classifying sensitive data, or broader network and access platforms like Netskope. Rubrik’s advantage is that it sits on the restore path. When an attack happens, the buyer cares not just about seeing risky data, but about getting clean data back online fast, which makes consolidation around Rubrik easier to justify.
The next phase of the market is likely to favor vendors that can own both visibility and recovery. As cloud data spreads across SaaS apps, databases, object stores, and identity systems, the winning platforms will be the ones that help security teams find exposed data, prove it is protected, and restore it quickly after an incident. That pushes Rubrik further from backup software and closer to a core data security platform.
