Price-Driven Commoditization of GPU Clouds

Raw GPU clouds win or lose mostly on delivered cost for a usable cluster, not on deep product lock in. For teams that bring their own containers, schedulers, and software stack, switching can take days because the provider is mainly selling access to NVIDIA boxes, power, and uptime. Differentiation appears only at the edges, in reserved capacity, newer chips, interconnect quality, and support for unusual workloads like robotics simulation and DFT.

The robotics customer used Voltage Park like rented bare metal, provision the cluster, install everything themselves, and judged vendors on price and reliability. They said switching providers would take a day or two, which is what commoditization looks like in practice when the workload is portable.

Another GPU cloud buyer saw the same pattern at larger scale. Lambda and CoreWeave were technically very comparable once both could meet the required HGX and InfiniBand spec, and the final decision came down to price per GPU hour. That points to competition around quote, capacity, and contract terms more than software moat.

The exception is when the product moves up the stack. Fireworks was not interchangeable with raw GPU clouds for Hebbia because it bundled model hosting, autoscaling, observability, and fast model catalog updates. That creates stickiness around API integration and workflow fit, but it serves a different buyer than teams that want direct infrastructure control.
Over time, the plain GPU rental layer should get even more interchangeable as Kubernetes, reservation markets, and standard NVIDIA architectures make workloads easier to move. The value will migrate upward into managed inference and tooling, and downward into scarce assets like power, chip allocation, and guaranteed high quality clusters.
