Chewy turned customer support into a distribution moat long before it built healthcare products. That matters because pet owners who trust Chewy to fix a late shipment, replace the wrong food, or remember a pet's name are much easier to move into Autoship, prescriptions, insurance, and clinic memberships. The brand started as high touch retail service, then used that trust to pull more of the pet care wallet into one account and one app.

  • The concrete wedge was not medicine, it was service. Chewy ran 24/7 customer service and built loyalty around responsiveness and personalization, then layered in pharmacy ordering, prescription management, and later virtual guidance and clinics. That sequence let healthcare ride on top of an existing habit, instead of asking owners to adopt a new care brand from scratch.
