Revolut's Remittance Wallet Play
Revolut
This is really a bet that cheaper money movement can be used to buy a much bigger customer relationship. In markets like India, Vietnam, and the Philippines, the prize is not a few basis points of FX spread, it is becoming the main account people use to receive remittances, hold a more stable balance, spend on a card, and later add investing, credit, and subscriptions. That matters because Revolut already shows it can turn broader usage into many revenue lines, with FX at about $800M in 2025 but card payments at $1.3B, subscriptions at $936M, and 11 businesses over $135M each.1 2 3 4 5
- The user acquisition angle is concrete. High remittance inflows and strong crypto adoption create a natural wedge for a wallet that can receive money fast, convert or store it, then route it into everyday spend. Chainalysis ranked India first in 2025 global crypto adoption, with Vietnam and the Philippines also near the top, and the World Bank tracks very large remittance inflows to the Philippines and Vietnam.4 5 6 7
- Wallet share means more than transfers. Revolut started as an FX card, then layered in P2P, crypto, stocks, banking, and paid plans. That playbook already worked in Europe, where broader product usage helped it reach an estimated $4B revenue in 2024 and $6B in 2025. The point of entering underbanked, remittance heavy markets is to repeat that expansion from one corridor use case into a full financial app.1 2 3
- Stablecoins make this more plausible because they lower the cost of the back end while leaving the front end familiar. Infrastructure builders in Southeast Asia describe neobank and card products that look ordinary to users, while settlement happens on stablecoin rails underneath. The FCA adding Revolut to its 2026 stablecoin sandbox suggests Revolut is testing exactly that kind of model before pushing it more broadly.5 8
If this works, Revolut becomes less like a travel card with FX monetization and more like a global primary account for markets where legacy banking is weakest. The next step is using stablecoin rails and local licenses to win remittance and stored balance flows first, then compounding into cards, savings, credit, and wealth, which is where the larger long term revenue pool sits.1 2 5 8
