Revolut's US deposit franchise challenge

Diving deeper into

Revolut

Company Report
Converting its small existing US user base into a profitable deposit franchise against entrenched neobanks like Chime, Dave, and Varo remains unproven.

The real risk is not whether Revolut can launch a US bank, it is whether it can persuade enough Americans to route paychecks into Revolut as their main account. In US neobanking, deposits are what unlock the profitable loop. A user with direct deposit keeps money in the app, swipes the debit card more often, is cheaper to underwrite for small loans, and is stickier over time. Revolut has only 300,000 plus US users today, while incumbents already built brands, cash deposit rails, and paycheck habits around that workflow.1 2 3 4 5

  • Chime shows what a working deposit franchise looks like. Its product stack was built around becoming the primary paycheck account, with early wage access, cash deposit at Walgreens, ATM access, and later credit products that depended on direct deposit users with recurring inflows. That makes growth more than app downloads, it makes the account the place where money lands first.2 3
  • A charter helps economics, but it does not create demand. Internal research on Chime explains that owning the bank can keep more interchange and give more control, but it also adds heavy compliance cost and a long approval process. Revolut is now pursuing that route in the US with a $500M investment plan, after years of relying on partner banks for US banking products.3 4 5 6
  • Revolut's strongest habits today come from FX, travel, investing, and subscriptions, not from being an everyday US checking account. Its global scale is real, with 70M plus retail customers and $67.5B of balances in FY2025, but that success was built largely outside the US. The open question is whether those strengths translate into paycheck led banking in a market where Chime, Dave, and Varo already trained users on that behavior.1 4 7

The next phase is simple. If Revolut can turn its US app from a secondary spending tool into a primary account with payroll, cash handling, and lending attached, the US can become a real profit center. If it cannot, the charter will mainly improve plumbing while incumbents keep the valuable customer relationship.2 3 4 5 6
