Preply is using AI to make each tutor more productive, not to replace the tutor. The important shift is that the platform is turning live lessons into software assisted workflows, where the classroom can transcribe a session, generate lesson summaries, suggest exercises, save shared notes, and track progress, while the paid product remains the recurring 1 on 1 lesson and the marketplace still runs on tutor choice, matching, and trust signals.

  • The tutor workflow is getting tighter inside the product. Preply Classroom already handles the lesson itself, auto confirms completed sessions for payout, and gives tutors tools like lesson summaries, homework tracking, and a shared Canvas workspace, which reduces admin work and keeps more of the teaching loop on platform.
  • This is different from app based language platforms like Duolingo, where the lesson is the software. On Preply, software mainly improves matching, preparation, follow up, and retention around a human session. That makes AI a margin and retention lever for a marketplace business, not a substitute for the core service.
  • A close analogue is BetterUp, which also sells human expertise wrapped in software, using AI for prompts, summaries, reporting, and between session support while preserving paid 1 on 1 coaching. In both models, software expands what one expert can handle and makes the service easier to standardize and measure.

The next step is a thicker learning operating system around each tutor. As Preply adds more AI generated feedback, between lesson speaking practice, and performance data into the classroom and app, the platform can raise tutor retention, improve learner outcomes, and justify taking a larger share of the relationship without removing the human from the center.
