The key split in modern procurement is whether the product starts with money movement or with workflow. Ramp, Brex, and Airbase began by issuing cards, catching receipts, and paying bills, then moved upstream into purchase requests so they could control spend before it hits the ledger. Zip started at that upstream step, where an employee asks to buy software, a manager approves it, legal and security review it, and finance decides how it should be paid.

  • Card led platforms are strongest when the purchase can be closed with a virtual card or simple bill pay. That makes them especially good at smaller, repeatable operating spend, where approval and payment can sit in one tool and finance can monetize through interchange plus software.
  • Zip is built more like a traffic controller for purchasing. It sits in front of ERP, AP, vendor management, and payments systems, routes requests through the right reviewers, and does not depend on being the card or payment rail, which makes it easier to fit into larger enterprise stacks.
  • The market is converging from both sides. Ramp reached $1B in annualized revenue by August 2025 through product attach across cards, bill pay, procurement, travel, and treasury, while Brex used embedded partnerships with platforms like Coupa and Zip to push its cards into procurement workflows. Airbase also bundles guided procurement with expenses and vendor payments for mid market teams.

Going forward, procurement software will look less like a separate category and more like a control layer wrapped around every business payment. The winners will be the products that can own the initial request, then hand off cleanly into card, AP, contract, and ERP systems, because that is where companies actually decide whether spend happens at all.
