Mirakl won early because Europe’s big retailers did not need a better webshop, they needed Amazon’s endless aisle without taking inventory risk. Fnac had already shown that a retailer marketplace could add millions in extra sales by letting third party merchants fill gaps in books, electronics, and long tail products. Mirakl turned that playbook into software that chains like Carrefour and Darty could buy instead of building seller onboarding, catalog matching, order routing, and payout systems from scratch.

  • Fnac was the key proof point. Mirakl’s founders previously helped launch and scale Fnac Marketplace, and Fnac disclosed that its marketplace supported online assortment expansion and generated about €52M of revenue in 2012. That gave Mirakl a live example of how a traditional retailer could use third party sellers to widen selection and lift e commerce sales.
  • The retailer need was very concrete. Amazon had already shifted a majority of retail units to third party sellers, so European chains faced a shelf space problem online. A marketplace let Carrefour or Darty show many more SKUs on their own site, keep customer traffic on their domain, and collect fees without owning the stock or running every shipment themselves.
  • This became a repeatable software category, not a one off services project. Mirakl now powers more than 450 marketplaces, processed $11.2B of marketplace and dropship GMV in 2024, and has expanded beyond core marketplace software into seller ads and payouts. That shows the original retailer marketplace wedge turned into a broader commerce operating system.

The next phase is less about convincing retailers to launch a marketplace, and more about helping them earn more from the traffic and sellers they already have. That is why Mirakl is pushing ads, payouts, seller networks, and AI tools. The market is moving from marketplace creation toward marketplace optimization and monetization.
