The real bottleneck in AI shopping is not picking a product, it is handling the messy decision work between interest and checkout. Vetted is built around the idea that shoppers rarely want a single perfect answer handed to them. They want a fast way to narrow choices across pack size, materials, merchant trust, shipping speed, returns, and price, then make the last few calls themselves. That makes research and comparison the highest value control point, not one shot autonomous purchase.

  • The current product flow already shows the limits. Perplexitys shopping flow surfaces a small set of purchasable cards and supports instant buying for select merchants, which works best when catalog, inventory, and fulfillment are tightly constrained. That is a narrower problem than open ended shopping across the full web.
  • Vetteds usage patterns point to shopping as a conversation, not a command. The product handles long natural language queries, asks follow ups, compares products, and helps with recurring everyday purchases around a $40 average order value. That behavior is much closer to guided decision support than agentic one click checkout.
  • The economic stakes are large because a lot of ecommerce software exists to influence shoppers before they buy. Rokt built a large business monetizing checkout moments and first party data across thousands of ecommerce partners. If an upstream recommendation engine makes the decision earlier, that layer loses leverage while payment networks gain it.

The next phase of shopping agents will look less like a single magic prompt and more like a blended interface. Recommendation engines will own more of the research and ranking work, while payments companies and merchant APIs make checkout more reliable in the background. The winners will be the companies that can combine trusted taste, live merchant data, and dependable transaction execution in one flow.
