DocSend's self-serve strategy
This was the key unlock that let DocSend keep one simple product while sounding native to many different buyers. The product itself was still just secure document sharing, tracking, and lightweight data rooms, but the website stopped talking in one abstract category and started showing concrete jobs, like fundraising, investor updates, sales follow up, and finance workflows. That raised conversion because each buyer could immediately see their own use case without DocSend having to build a separate product for each segment.

DocSend learned the hard way that broad category language like sales enablement created confusion, while use case pages improved both conversion and SEO. In a self serve motion, the website has to do the work of a sales rep, which means explaining who the product is for, what file gets sent, and what the sender can control after sending.

This is different from true vertical SaaS. Highspot sold directly to the budget owner in sales enablement, with admin features and enterprise positioning built for that buyer. DocSend won more often when one person or a small team adopted it first, then expanded internally, because the end user loved the workflow even if the top down buyer preferred a specialist.

Airtable and Dock show the same pattern in adjacent markets. Both are horizontal tools with reusable building blocks, but they package those blocks around specific functions like marketing, onboarding, or sales so customers can understand the product on day one. PandaDoc used the next step of the same playbook, starting from e-sign and moving into nearby document workflows like sales rooms and payments.
The long term direction for products like this is clearer packaging around repeated workflows, not a fully bespoke product for every niche. Horizontal products that can keep the core system simple, then layer on vertical pages, templates, and adjacent features, get the best of both worlds, broad TAM underneath, with sharper distribution and better conversion on top.
