Function Becoming Health System of Record
Function Health
The key move is that Function is trying to turn a once or twice a year lab purchase into a health dashboard members keep returning to. The product now pulls in blood work, imaging, wearables, and uploaded records, then layers on AI chat and step by step protocols so the value comes from watching trends, not just reading one test result. That creates a stickier subscription than a standalone lab panel and pushes Function closer to Oura and Whoop than to simple testing vendors.1 2 3 4 5
- Testing is the intake funnel, not the whole business. Function started with a $499 annual membership for two large lab panels and add ons, then expanded into MRI after buying Ezra in May 2025 and launching a $499 scan. More data types give the app more reasons to stay open between blood draws.1 2 6
- The competitive set changes once the product becomes longitudinal. Oura grew from sleep into stress, cycle tracking, and metabolic health, while Whoop built a subscription around continuous recovery and health signals. Both show that repeated measurement plus software interpretation can support much higher engagement than one off diagnostics.3 4
- This also helps distribution partners. Equinox ARC combines Function biomarkers and a full women’s hormone panel with Oura data and coaching, which only works if Function can keep interpreting new inputs over time. In employer and benefits channels, that ongoing layer is easier to justify than a single annual test.5 7
The next step is for Function to become the consumer health system of record for affluent prevention minded members. If more partners plug in coaching, benefits, and wearables on top of Function data, the company can move from selling tests to owning the recurring software layer that decides what action a member takes next.2 4 5 7
