Commure Targets Hospital Operating Layer
Commure
The pivot shows that selling tools to developers was not enough, because the real buyer in healthcare is the hospital that wants one vendor to own messy workflows end to end. Commure started in 2020 with a FHIR based developer platform for building EHR connected apps, then moved into direct enterprise products and acquisitions, adding patient lists, hiring, communications, revenue cycle, monitoring, and ambient documentation into one hospital software stack.1 2 3 4 5
- The original idea looked like Zapier for hospitals, but healthcare data pipes are not standardized enough for a broad self serve app ecosystem. That pushed Commure toward selling finished software to health systems instead of selling rails to outside developers.2 3
- The Athelas merger in October 2023 turned that shift into a full enterprise platform play. It combined Commure’s hospital software footprint with Athelas products in revenue cycle and patient monitoring, and the combined company was announced at a $6B valuation.4 5
- The Augmedix acquisition in July 2024 shows how the strategy now works in practice. Ambient scribing is not a stand alone wedge, it is one more module that helps Commure get deeper into clinician workflow and then pull coding and billing work onto the same platform.2 6 7
This points toward a bigger contest over who becomes the operating layer on top of hospital systems. Commure is building by bundling AI documentation, coding, and admin tools around the EHR, which gives it a path to win budget one workflow at a time while moving closer to Epic’s all in one position.2 4 7
