Maker AI Costs Exceed RR+ Revenue

the monthly cost to support one Maker AI user exceeded RR+ net revenue per subscriber during early access

Maker AI showed that lowering the barrier to creation does not matter if every new builder is loss making. Early access users were heavy users, averaging 35 plus minutes per session and 300 plus prompts, which gave Rec Room proof of demand but also showed that bundling the tool inside a $7.99 RR+ subscription would put the company upside down on each active user. That is why Maker AI was pulled from the bundle and shifted toward standalone or usage based pricing.

  • This cost problem is sharper for Rec Room than for its core economy. Rec Room keeps about $0.70 on each $1 of first party revenue, but only about $0.30 on UGC revenue after creator payouts and platform fees, so an expensive AI tool aimed at expanding the long tail can easily dilute margins instead of lifting them.
  • The strategic contrast with rivals is that Rec Room lets people build inside the game, with voice chat and collaboration running live, while Roblox creation is still centered on PC tools. That makes creation more accessible, but it also means Rec Room is trying to subsidize compute heavy creation for a broader, less professional user base.
  • The August 2025 restructuring makes the implication concrete. Rec Room narrowed focus toward top creators and first party content, and leadership tied the layoffs to an overly broad push to make creation work everywhere across VR, PC, console, and mobile. Maker AI fits that same lesson, broad creation access is only worth scaling if monetization covers infrastructure cost.

Going forward, AI creation in gaming will split into two models. Broad consumer platforms will meter usage, gate premium features, or reserve the best tools for proven creators, while high margin ecosystems with stronger creator earnings can invest more aggressively. For Rec Room, the win is not maximum AI adoption, it is turning AI into a tool that helps its best creators ship faster and earn more profitably.
