Naming Vertex AI as the closest thing to the right answer says the winning product shape in ML is no longer a better point tool, it is a single control plane that takes a model from raw data to production. Nyckel is chasing that same simplification for non experts, while Google proves the bundle matters, even if the experience still leaves room for a cleaner UI and faster self serve workflows.

  • The core shared idea is that customers should not stitch together labeling, training, deployment, and monitoring by hand. Vertex AI packages those stages in one platform with training, model registry, pipelines, and monitoring. Nyckel describes the same destination, but with the API centered on inputs and outputs instead of ML infrastructure objects.
  • The main split in the startup field is by user and data type. Roboflow goes deep on computer vision and edge deployment, which fits ML practitioners managing datasets, models, and devices. Akkio abstracts prediction for business data and analytics teams. Levity pushes farther into workflow automation, where the model is one step inside an email or document process.
  • That makes Google the benchmark and not necessarily the direct template. Vertex AI can cover more of the enterprise stack because it starts with cloud infrastructure and broad model support. Startups win by narrowing the workflow, hiding more of the machinery, and turning model building into a fast product action that a PM or ops lead can complete alone.

The market is moving toward fewer standalone MLOps tools and more packaged systems that feel like application software. The likely end state is a layered market, with cloud platforms like Vertex AI as the default backbone for technical teams, and startup products on top that make specific AI jobs feel as simple as setting up Stripe or Twilio.
